Die unabdingbare Passion und viel Mut sorgten dafür, dass das Familienunternehmen den Herausforderungen der Geschichte langfristig standhielt – von der totalen Zerstörung des Werks im 2. Weltkrieg über die Krise während der Rezessionsjahre 1986 bis zur Rettung durch die Brüder Norbert und Hartmut Bretz im Folgejahr. 2010 stieg Hartmuts Tochter zunächst als Designerin ein und seit 2018 teilt sie sich die Geschäftsführung mit ihrem Onkel Norbert Bretz. Mit Herz, Sinn und vollem Körpereinsatz zum Durchbruch „Wir sind ein richtiges Familienunternehmen mit langer Tradition“, sagt Carolin. „Die Bewahrung von Werten wie Zusammenhalt, Respekt und Vertrauen ist uns wichtig. Dazu gehören auch der offene Diskurs und ein konstruktiver Umgang mit unterschiedlichen Standpunkten. Unsere Kolleginnen und Kollegen zählen zum erweiterten Familienumfeld. Einige begleiten uns seit Jahrzehnten. Das macht uns stolz und zeigt uns, dass wir den richtigen Weg gehen. Ein Möbelstück wie eine Reise wie ein Möbelstück Die Umsetzung der Unternehmenswerte hört nicht bei einer fairen Beschäftigung auf. Aus ethischen Gründen verzichtet Bretz komplett auf tierische Produkte wie Leder oder Daunen. Seit den 90er Jahren gelten farbenfrohe, schillernde Velours-Stoffe als das Markenzeichen schlechthin. Die handverlesenen Textilien stammen hauptsächlich aus Italien, Deutschland und Belgien. Was die Kreativität betrifft, lässt Bretz sich nicht limitieren. Kreativdirektorin Pauline beschreibt den Stil der Möbel mitunter als „maximal, eklektisch, phantasievoll“. Das Experiment mit Maßen und Klischees, das Dehnen von Designgrenzen lässt sich als latent rebellische, aber auch verspielte Philosophie interpretieren. „Ganz klar, Bretz polarisiert“, sagt Pauline. „Aber eines haben unsere Möbel gemein: Sie erzählen ihre jeweilige Geschichte, beflügeln die Phantasie und vereinen zwei grundlegende, aber im Kern konträre Themen des Lebens. Die Sehnsucht nach fernen Welten steht dem Wunsch nach Geborgenheit gegenüber. Our sofas consist of a sturdy wooden frame, spring core and complicated layers of foam of different densities. Perfectly matched to each other, they ensure that every Bretz piece is wonderfully comfortable, the ideal combination of softness and firmness that lets you sink in while giving you ergonomic support. Many years of experience, passion and precision have gone into making sure that the cover fits like a tailor-made garment. A last tightening of the velour, a last stroke of the hand over the piece: each of these moments is a small farewell before the sofa goes on its journey to its new home. Firmly rooted in our traditional craft with a keen eye on the future Johann Bretz founded the company in 1895. Since then, every upholstered piece of furniture that leaves our workshop in Gensingen is a handmade original. It took passion and a lot of courage to keep the family business running over the years. From total destruction in World War II, to the recession in 1986, to being saved by the Bretz brothers, Norbert and Hartmut, in the following year. In 2010, Hartmut’s daughter, Carolin, initially joined the company as a designer, and since 2018 she has shared the management with her uncle Norbert Bretz. Creating the unexpected with our hearts, minds and sense of touch: our recipe for success “We are a family business through and through with a long tradition” says Carolin. “Maintaining values like solidarity, respect, and trust is really important to us. And we cherish open discourse and different view points. All of our colleagues are part of our extended family. Some have been with us for decades. We are very proud of this and it shows us that we are on the right path.” Take Maria for example: She started her career at Bretz in 1976 as a seamstress and today she is head of the sewing and cutting department. “I love my job,” she says and means it. “We respect and trust each other. The road to the finished product is sometimes paved with sleepless nights and starting all over again, but also with a rich exchange of ideas. When the heat is on, together we find a way to make the seemingly impossible possible. Everyone here is totally dedicated and gives their very best.” Every piece of furniture tells a myriad of stories... But our company values do not end with looking after our employees fairly; for ethical reasons, we at Bretz have completely abandoned the use of any animal products like leather or down. Since the 1990s, dazzling velours are our ultimate trademark. These hand picked fabrics come mainly from Italy, Germany and Belgium. When it comes to creativity, there are no limits at Bretz. Creative director Pauline sometimes describes the style of furniture as “limitless, eclectic, imaginative”. We experiment with dimensions and clichés, stretching design boundaries in a way that is rebellious, but also playfully philosophical. “Bretz definitely polarizes,” Pauline says, “but there is one thing that all of our furniture has in common: Each piece tells its own story, gives wings to the imagination and combines two fundamental and seemingly contrary human desires; the desire to see strange worlds juxtaposed with our need for comfort, familiarity and security. Les canapés se composent d'une solide structure en bois, de ressorts et d'une superposition complexe de mousses de différentes densités. Parfaitement adaptés les uns aux autres, ces éléments assurent le confort d'assise typique de la marque Bretz, qui incite d'une part à s'y enfoncer sans retenue et offre d'autre part de la stabilité. Pour que la housse s'adapte au meuble comme un vêtement fait sur mesure, le travail de développement requiert une longue expérience, de la passion et de la précision. Un dernier serrage du velours, une dernière caresse de la main sont d’autant de petits adieux avant que le canapé ne rejoigne son nouveau foyer. Un ancrage solide dans l’artisanat de la tapisserie d’ameublement, un esprit tourné vers l’avenir Johann Bretz a fondé l’entreprise en 1895. Depuis, chaque meuble rembourré qui quitte la manufacture de Gensingen, dans la Hesse rhénane, est une pièce unique conçue à la main. Le parcours jusqu'au produit fini est parfois jalonné de nuits blanches et de retours à la case départ, mais aussi d'échanges d'idées. Lorsque les choses se corsent, nous trouvons ensemble un moyen de rendre possible ce qui semble impossible. Chacun donne ici le meilleur de lui-même. » Des meubles qui invitent au voyage La concrétisation des valeurs de l’entreprise ne s’arrête pas à un emploi plus équitable. Pour des raisons éthiques, Bretz a totalement renoncé aux produits d’origine animale, comme le cuir ou le duvet. Depuis les années 1990, les tissus en velours aux couleurs vives et chatoyantes sont considérés comme sa marque de fabrique par excellence. Les textiles triés sur le volet principalement d’Italie, d’Allemagne et de Belgique. En ce qui concerne la créativité, Bretz ne s’impose aucune limite. Pauline, directrice de la création, décrit parfois le style des meubles comme « maximaliste, éclectique, imaginatif ». L'expérimentation avec les dimensions et les clichés, le dépassement des limites du design peuvent être interprétés comme une philosophie ludique à la rébellion latente. « Il est clair que Bretz polarise », assure Pauline. « Mais nos meubles ont une chose en commun : chacun raconte sa propre histoire, stimule l’imagination et réunit deux thématiques essentielles de la vie, qui sont pourtant fondamentalement opposées. L’aspiration à de lointaines contrées s’oppose au désir de se sentir en sécurité.
